I'm buying a laptop that has Vista 32-bit and an AMD Dual Core Processor. I can get a free upgrade from Microsoft to windows 7 (see link below). They will send me two disc. One with windows 7 32-bit and the other is a 64-bit. Can I load the 64 bit window 7 onto the laptop even though it has Vista 32-bit?

Thanks

You will have to do a Custom install rather than an upgrade install. To save your settings and files you will have to use Windows Easy Transfer, programs will need to be installed again.

Scenario 2: Upgrade from 32-bit Windows Vista/XP to 64-bit Windows 7

You could look around and see if you can purchase something with Windows 7 already installed.

Here is something worth knowing.

"It may seem confusing, but here’s the solution: PCmover Upgrade Assistant. XP to Windows 7? No problem! Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional? Yep, we do that. How about Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit? Of course!"

In any case it's better to do a fresh install instead of an upgrade.
Usually only the original install media is required to be able to install the upgrade, but I haven's done it that way myself, so I can't say for sure...
