I attempted to upgrade to from vista to home premium last night, but it failed aftr completing most of the install. The message stated Setup can't continue, and it will return to the previous version. It then returned to the previous version (vista).

Prior to the upgrade I ran the MS utility to ensure my pc was compatible and it passed without problems.

When I installed windows 7, it provided me with an option of loading the operating system and resetting any particians, or simply an upgrade. I chose upgrade.

I am not against a reload. I understand I will need to reload my software. In addition to office I am running VS2008 and SQL 2005, as well as Visual Foxpro 9 and a few other apps.

One final note - I had a version of McAfee installed with an expired subscription. I since removed it and downloaded the MS Virsus Scan from ms security essentials. I ran a scan an all was fine.

32 bit to 32 bit? do you have enough free space on the hdd to perform an upgrade? Any clues in the install log file?

I believe the current version is 32 bit, but not positive. I simply downloaded Windows 7 Home Premium from MS and ran the install. It went quite a way through before stopping.

They may have been some log files, but I may have deleted them when I started cleaning up files through windows system tools.

I hope to give it shot again tonight. What is the easiest way to determine if I am going from 32bit to 32 bit?

When you right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties, on the resulting page it will tell you the "System Type" under the System heading and whether it is a 64-bit or 32-bit operating system.

It might pay you to temporarily stop from running all third party programs and non Microsoft services before you attempt the upgrade.

These are the Setup logs that might give you a few clues.

C:\Windows\setupact.log
C:\Windows\Logs\DPX\setupact.log
C:\Windows\Panther\setupact.log
C:\Windows\Panther\UnattendGC\setupact.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.offline.log
C:\Windows\setuperr.log
C:\Windows\Logs\DPX\setuperr.log
C:\Windows\Panther\setuperr.log
C:\Windows\Panther\UnattendGC\setuperr.log

I removed all unwanted programs, then looked at the warning message closer from the utility to see if the pc can handle windows 7. I deleted the printer drivers and when to add/remove programs and removed Modem Diagnostic by Dell. This was listed a a possilbe conflict and since I do not use a modem - poof.

It worked fine after that.
