G'day ppls.

Here's the story....
Domino:
I am upgrading our domino server (P2/450, 256mb ram, 11gb hdd space left on domino drive, NT4/SP6)from V4.6 to V6.0

Will domino upgrade? With windows when you install it you have the option of upgrading. Is this the same with domino?

Are there tricks or tips?

Can I roll back if problems present themselves?

Client:
My notes client when I tested it on my machine installed but did not upgrade. It did not take any of my databases over to the new Notes. This is not a huge issue for me but if I have to open up all the databases manually on each of the 100 PC's on our network I will have to do a heap of swearing!

I just discovered that my address book was not transfered either! [evil]

The interface is SO much better than v4.6 so I have to give that to IBM[smile]

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cheers,

Pete

OK here is the answer ;-)

Forgive me for saying this but it sounds to me that you are not highly experienced with administrating Domino, so upgrading will be a bit dangerous for you to attempt all by yourself. Correct me if I am wrong!
I just say this to protect you because upgrading a Domino server from R4 to R6 is work for specialists.

I will explain 2 possibilities for you to move to R6:

1. Do not upgrade your existing server
Instead install a NEW machine in the same domain and setup a brand new R6 server. Replicate all your databases between the old and new server. Then move all your users in small groups to the new server.
When you are sure that all your databases still work fine and that all users can work from the new server, you follow the decommision procedures to take the old server out.

This is the safest option

2. Upgrading
Notes ALWAYS upgrades your existing client and server installation when installing but ONLY if you install in the same directory. Do NOT install 2 different clients or servers on 1 machine in different directories!

a/
First install a test R6 server on some machine to familiarize yourself with the new administration.

b/
Make sure that you read the "Release notes" that come with the R6 server first and that you understand all that is mentioned here.

c/
Open the R6 Administration help file and read everything about installing and upgrading. Make sure you understand about the pre- and post install/upgrade tasks to perform.

d/
If your server is a mail server make sure you understand the differences between the R4 MTA and the R5/R6 routing.

e/
Remove all full-text indexes from all databases on your R4 server. They are not compatible and will make your R6 server crash.

f/
Now upgrade the machine. Follow the Lotus guidelines in the Administration help exactly!

This way is less save. If one of your databases is not compatible with R6 you will need to fix it immediatly if you have no other R4 server anymore. For this you need to have development experience also.

For your clients: if you install in the same directory the client will be updated. You will maybe need to replace the design of the local address book to see the R6 design.
The users will need to make a decision if they convert their mailbox to R6 or leave it in R4 format.

Good luck with this one!

Thanks for the Info. You are correct. Domino is NOT one of my fortes [smile]

Currently building a pc with W2K so I can do the test install and then we will see where it leads.

We are out in the bush in Australia and can't afford to bring consultants in from the big smoke.

As such, all IT gets lumped on me and my junior IT; which is why I am doing the notes upgrade.

Pete
