Upgrade from AIX 5.1 to AIX5.3

Has anyone upgraded there RS6K server from AIX5.1 to AIX5.3 ... If so what problem id any did you run into ...

well i upgraded from 4.3 to 5.2 but not as your case!

I hope you don't find any problems! just make sure that your target system for upgade support aix 5.3

bootinfo -p

If you get 'chrp' you can upgrade to AIX 5.3

But make sure you upgrade firmware (microcode) of server first or you will get stuck - needs to be at least CM040712 for AIX5.3 but there have been 2 more updates. Current level for that model is CM060505

Hey Folks

Again thanks for the response ... Question will there be a problem with the internal disk on the H80 and 6H1 ? I heard 5.3 will be looking for 32gig drive and we have 18gig which will cause the install to hang . Is that a true statment ..

False statement.

You will be fine with 18GB drives. We have installs of 5.3 with 9.0GB disks.

The disks seem to be OK but I think there is a problem in the pre-migration script on these machines because of the way they report the firmware level, the pre-migration script fails.
There is a hack that fixes the script.
Try the pre-migration script and I think you will find it fails with an error about the power (spcn) firmware level.
And I can't remember the hack (of the pre-migration script) but I think it involves the command to determine the firmware and you need to change the $3 to $4.....

The script can be run at any time without risk, look at the failure message and then cat the script and look for the command ......
If you can't work it out from there, post that bit of the script and the output of just that line / command and we'll have a look for you.

And again thanks for info ... I going to upgrade the firmware on the H80 AIX5.1 create an MKSYSB and then try to upgrade to AIX5.3 ... I feel it will work .. I will let all who reponsed to my message the out come ... AGAIN THNKS

OMG! it lives on the 5.3 media in /usr/lpp/bos/pre_migration

For your machine you will see it fail whilst checking the firmware, so copy it to a system disk and edit....see above.

You run it to check:
Placement and size of boot logical volume
Requirements for disk space
Verification of current system installation
