Thanks for the previous advice.

I am now cosidering upgrading only one of our servers to 9.30 but this server is a replicate target (not server). Although Informix/IBM says that both are compatible and can have a mixed server environment, can some one verify for me that you can have a 7.31 Server with a 9.3 target.

Also can you use onbar Level 0 backup and restore on a 9.3 version, for migration?

thanks

Disk structures have changed - so you should be using 7.3 databases on 9.3 server, although Informix's papers say that you can replicate only between same servers/platforms

which replication are you talking about - EDR or HDR?
what do you call migration - data movement between two machines or newer version on same machine?

Server upgrade seamlesly converts underlying data structures, but dbexport/dbimport can be made via tape or directory of files and is more compatible with different servers

gheist,
Thanks for the info. I am really interested to know about "Informix's papers say that you can replicate only between same servers/platforms". Can you point me to the paper.

I am talking about EDR (enterprise data rep) not the High Availability rep.

I want to do a onbar backup on 7.31, upgrade the server to 9.30 and if not okay, I would like to install a new instance of 9.3 and use the onbar backup to do the restore.
The point is nothing is "seamless" and I am worried about the conversion not working.

Thanks

You should be aware that you will need a backup from informix binaries/libs at this point and an installer for old version might become handy

EDR guide has some interim protocol considerations between different hardwares on servers - they didnt require same servers, although new server supports new datatypes which cannot be replicated to old server
