Folks, we have tried to upgrade this MICS from 4.0 to 7.1xc several times. We have used the upgrade kit in the following manner:

Made backup of existing customer database @4.0 (just in case)

Changed out NVRAM from Issue 1 to Issue 2

Bought system up on ROM upgrade tool

Turned system down and brought up on 7.0.upgrade tool

Lost customer database

Brought system up again on 4.0 and loaded original customer database .....comes back up fine...on 4.0 though
What did we do wrong please?

Found something else on the Forum....Curly Cord stated in a previous post that you must go from 4.0 to 4.1 then to 6.1 then to 7....when I purchased the upgrade tool(s) no 4.1 to 6.1 tool was sent...could that be the problem please? I have only an upgrade ROM tool, upgrade to 7.0 and new 7.1xc card.

The issue is with the variant. You can not go from 4.0 to 7.1xc, you must go from 4.0 to 7.1, using the tools you have, and then to 7.1XC.

Hey thanks, but that was exactly what I did - 4.0 to 4.1 to 7.0 then to 7.1xc; was it necessary to go to 6.1 before I went to 7.0

Yes, upgrade to 6.1 before 7.X by using 6.1 (tool or the actual software).
I have yet to hear its possible to go from 7.0 to 7.1 XC, one would have thought you have to go to 7.1 then to 7.1XC

Also reading first post looks like you may have messed up by swapping NVRAM and the software/tool at the same time.
I would have swapped NRAM, reboot, test, power down and start the upgrade procedure using the 2 tools to 7.1 (not 7.0), then go to 7.1 XC.

Think of the tools as being actual software.....you can use the software as a tool if you had/have.

If you had a spare 4.0 XC then you could also go striaght to 4.0 XC then use th XC tools or XC softwares to upgrade.
Either way you must go straight accross at one point but you went on a slight angle from 7.0 to 7.1 XC and I am not sure that works.

Hey thanks curlycord! I'll try again, but if the instructions with the upgrade tool(s) were correct, then that is what I went by. You are correct tho, the tool said upgrade to 7.0....I purchased the 7.1xc separately. I wrote down the steps I took; here's a better overview:
Backed up original DB
1.Powered down changed the NVRAM
2.Powered up using new NVRAM W/original DB (that should have loaded the NVRAM w/the original DB
3. Powered down and inserted the ROM Upgrade tool
4. "Insert MICS" appears
5. Powered down - incerted "upgrade 7" tool
6. Powered up - no customer DB; shows the dreaded Jan 01, 1:00am ---I dunno!!!!! What went wrong?

You do not need your step 3.

1 Back up system
2 Power down and insert new NVRAM card
3 power up and make sure you have no alarms
4 power down (if you like you can do another back up here)
5 insert 7.0 upgrade tool
6 Power up and make sure you have no alarms
7 Power down
8 Insert 7.1xc
9 power up and make sure you have no alarms ( iwould back here again just for kicks)
10 Power Down
11 Install any addtional hardware and power up
