Hi guys,

Yesterday I installed AIX52 ML8 on my 7028-6C4, and when I rebooted the machine didn't feel much like booting, stopping at led E170 for about 30 minutes, and finally giving me a B11B4661 led and some kind of prompt for debugging or so.
Seems that my firmware isn't up to date. Now I got the latest firmware file from the IBM site, and instructions on how to upgrade. They state that the file should be placed in a folder /tmp/fwupdate or either on diskette. Now te following problem arises :
1. system doesn't boot,so no rootvg available
2. No diskette drive on my system, only cdrom

anybody experience such a problem before? suggestions are welcome !

thx in advance

Can you boot it from mksysb? Then reinstall from mksysb to lower level and upgrade firmware from /tmp/fwupdate before you attempt another AIX upgrade.

Or if you have other disks, install an mksysb or fresh install 5200-04 or sth. on those disks and try to boot it from there. That way, afterwards you won't have to re-upgrade, simply reboot with an updated bootlist, or by selecting the correct boot disk from SMS menu.

From the service guide b1xx 4661 is a memory problem.

Try burning a diag cd and testing the system first.

As for updating the firmware you might be able to boot a mksysb or an earlier AIX install cd, take the recovery option to start a shell and import vg / mount FS then copy the firmware to /tmp/fwupdate from a cd or tape, then do the update.

Or you could buy a floppy - from the parts section of the service guide (and a quick google) it seems the drive is the same as a netfinity 5000 so is probably just a normal drive but they also list a carrier and a power cable that may be system specific.

good luck.

Just found the problem together with IBM.upgrade to ML8 has corrupted AIX,which messed up the NVRAM of the system.
Only way to fix it : reinstall ...
IBM claims the problem is related to firmware, but that wasn't the deal.Reinstalled the system with an mksysb of ML6 , in combination with the baseinstall cd of ML8, without the firmware upgrade.System booted as expected.Just to make sure I upgraded the firmware anyway afterwards.IBM had advised us to upgrade to ML8 to prevent jfs2log corruption....How ironic...

thx for all the help though ! much appreciated !
