Upgrade: File access error when plugging in unknown digital sets 3

A couple of weeks ago I had to visit a customer to replace their old NEC system that had failed at very short notice. I just grabbed a few IPO V2 units and a bunch of 1408 sets that were lying around in the office.

I knew I had a Combination card for the 4 digital sets and also by chance a analogue trunk card. I had a version 9.0 unit that I provided and although the box was fully working, I couldn't get the phones to upgrade or perhaps downgrade the firmware. I kept getting a message of "Upgrade: File access error". I couldn't whlst on site, find a way of getting those phones I found to work on the 9.0 system.

My guess is that the phones I grabbed were from our old office system which was at relese 10.0. I've looked on some forums for this error message, but I'm unable to find if it was possible to revert the firmware as I thought it would just be a case of plugging them in. I couldn't find out if I could default the 1408 phones.

I was lucky in that I had a version 11 system with a few basic licenses that were enough to complete the task as time was short when working against the clock to restore service. Those 1408 sets did an upgrade OK.

This then got me thinking if I could get out of this problem should it ever happen again. I'm sure many of you reading this would have a simular situation as mine at some point.

Sounds like the firmware files weren't available on the SD card or it was programmed to get them from somewhere else.

Monitor should show what file it needs and where it tries to get it from.

Thanks for the reply back. I took a look in Monitor and found the following lines of data

18:03:06 520704011mS PRN: UpgradeEngine(f4e121a0:0)::Start FileSysReader file=1400R46.bin
18:03:06 520704088mS PRN: UpgradeFileReader(f4e121a0:0)::End of File 1400R46.bin len=0 reason=2 error=4

I have looked in the embedded area and I don't have the file 1400R46.bin when looking in the Primary folder. My IPO system is at 9.0.
Has anyone got a copy please?

I've looked at a version 11 system and I see that the file present is 1400R48.bin. It is the same file that is currently on my 9.0 system.

All I would like to know is if it is possible to use any digital extension phone that was on a later software release on an older system?.

Would I have to modify any file to force the phone to look for a different firmware version or is it not possible to downgrade these phones?.

1400FW=48:1400R48.BIN and reboot IPO

IP Office remote service

A great many thanks for the replies. Although the suggestion from "derfloh" didn't work, but has earned a star from me!. It did get me thinking as I already had a working digital 1408 phone that stopped working after I had made that "NoUser" change and rebooted the IP Office. It was stuck in an upgrading mode along with the two others that previously had the upgrade error message.

What I then did was to go back to a link on the Avaya web site where I was able to download the file called "1408_1416_R46.bin". I have attached the file and the link was at

I loaded this file into the Primary folder on the SD card where some of the other files for firmware are located.

Referring back to the suggestion that "derfloh" had made, meant that I needed to add in the "NoUser" source number area the string of

1408_1416FW=46:1408_1416_R46.bin

I saved the config and rebooted the system again. All three 1408 phones I had connected did an upgrade OK and now work fine.
