I apologize straight off for being mid-level management. That said, I'm trying to push information and good decisions up the food chain, so bear/bare with me. And thanks for any information in advance.

Both my boss and I are relatively new to our positions and we've inherited a "migration to Skype for Business." We've been told up and down how old and unusable the Nortel is, blah blah blah.

The previous middle management decided to take the Nortel off of maintenance, and the batteries failed, which has resulted in unpleasant outages. No fun. However, I was able to corner the repair technician and ask a few questions while I got the CallPilot web server rebooted. They said "These Nortel's are great and can be upgraded, anyone who said that its old and dead had an agenda." "Just pull the old parts out, slap the new ones in and boom, off to the races and no more grey market parts." Considering we only have 5% moved to Skype for business, miles to go before E911 is correct, let alone VLANs for phones, etc. I want to consider all options, without a preconceived notion of what's "good or bad" I mostly want to give the users what they want, which is basic phone service.

So my question is this, you walk into a job with an existing Nortel Meridian, running 3.0 (or so I'm told) and dying batteries. We're going to have to make the investment in new batteries, so we're already going to invest. Important people are even considering putting it back on maintenance.

Do you rip, or do you sit down with a vendor and run through upgrades to get to 7.x?

Nortel Meridians just don't die. I would upgrade.

Save your money on upgrades, gp with the emetrtel UCX!

I would upgrade and get the batteries replaced. There is currently no end of sale or support for the current 7.6 release. It will be around for a long time yet and support will be there also. It sounds to me like no one there really has a clue on how to work on the machine so putting it on maintenance is a good idea but typically a pricey one. Especially having it supported through PASS.

From someone that has been on both sides of the desk, I would look at where you are going and what you plan to do down the road. Being on 3.0 you are pretty stuck where you are, technology wise, but you do have an upgrade path available. The issue is being out of maintenance. With the Nortel, if you had PASS you would be looking at no cost for the software, but there would definitely be some HW costs involved, and then the labor. You also have to consider the move from TDM (if you have digital sets) to IP sets, if that is the way you want to move.

The Call Pilot is probably in need of an upgrade as well, but that is pretty straight forward from 3 to 5.

On Skype for Business, check around. Go to some companies that have tried this path and get some knowledge on their pains and gains from doing this. We have our 7.5 connected to Lync and it works well. We are moving to 7.65 because it's cheap and we need to align with Avaya support, but we did look at other options prior to making this decision. As stated above, these things just churn away. Once you have it set they just keep on running.

If you go IP then you bring in Session/System Manager and there is an integration with the data side that becomes very important.

If you are thinking of new technology, SIP phones, Call Center apps, Conferencing systems, then you may want to upgrade to prepare for that. If you don't use these items, then there are cheaper solutions out there.

Out of maintenance will kill you in the upgrade unless you really lean on your Account manager and the number of users warrants you getting a deep discount. It won't be cheap for you. But get a quote. It doesn't hurt to see what it will cost, then you have something to work on when looking at all your options.

Going back to maintenance, you will probably need to go with a Business Partner direct for support as Avaya will definitely want you to upgrade for maintenance.

Hope this helped.
