I have a Dell Optiplex GX250, it has been a very stable platform.

I bought this machine after destroying two previous machines with my requirements. One Gateway and one made by a local PC Shop.

Most of the time the machine is used for Access development, however, over the years the needs have changed and now it sports a TV Card and doubles as a second TV.

I have upgraded the RAM, upgraded the drives to 80 and 250GB, upgraded the DVD to DVD RW.

Now I am thinking it would be nice to upgrade the processor to a Duo or something and Motherboard. Dell won't sell me a motherboard and CPU so I am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for me. I was vaguely thinking about Tyan.

Pretty much when you change the processor you change the mainboard and you change the RAM simultaneously, to take advantage if the latest platform. If you have 1066 or 800 DDR2 modules they may work, but why?

Leave the original PC assembled, get a case and build another rig, using your drives if you like. $75 buys a lot of harddrive today, install one in your old machine and hand it down.

The reality is:

Your Dell case won't be suitable for an upgrade to Core2 Duo.
1) The proprietory DELL power supply will probably have incompatible wiring, plus it won't have the 24 pin connector required by newer boards or be powerful enough
2) The front panel wiring comes in blocks on the DELL and won't match with the new motherboards headers.
3) DELL's cooling system won't match

Basically there is little you can use from your old system, even the older ATA hard drives will slow up a newer SATAII system if used as boot drives.
Buy or build a complete new base unit, sell on yours as a going concern, use your new drive as a backup in the new system.
