Help please. We are trying to upgrade a NT4.0 server that was a BDC to W2k server and make it a member server. We still have 2 other NT4.0 servers acting as the PDC and BDC. Whenever we reboot the server it runs a AD wizard and errors with "An AD for the domain or an AD domain controller could not be found".

It wants to find an AD domain even though selected to make it a member server.
Do we need to do a clean install of W2K to get rid of the BDC reference?
Thank you.

If I am not mistaken if you upgrade a BDC to Win2K it is assuming you are setting up the BDC in an AD mixed mode environment (mixed AD and NT4 Domain env). As you said your best bet would be to install Win2K clean on the server.

thanks for the quick response. The fellow doing the installation cancelled the original upgrade whenever it got to the AD installation section. So now, whenever we start the server it wants to continue and won't allow us to finish since there is no AD domain.

So a clean install should fix the problem.... any things to watch out for?

Thanks again.

There's not much to a Win2k server build, as long as your server BIOS is up to date, you have the appropriate drivers (if required) available and just make sure you patch that server as soon as possible.
