I have a customer who wishes to upgrade their existing R3 Partner system to the latest R7 system. They have a fully loaded system in a 5 slot carrier with R5 VM. They already have a remote access/upgrade/backup/restore card in their R3 setup. My question is...

Can I use the existing backup card to take their programming information from the R3 to the R7 unit, or do I have to buy a new card, or, as I have been told by one vendor, I have to reprogram the entire system from scratch?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Hi jjdad,
You may need a patch for the Messaging VS R5 also. Contact your Avaya support. There is a problem with DND and coverage.

you could however upgrade the 3 to a 6 and not have to reprogram

is there a particular need to go to 7 ?

If you mean backup and restore the Partner ACS programming database, those databases never migrate (i.e you can never backup from a processor with release X and restore to a processor with release Y). Unlike the Merlin Legend/Magix - there is no conversion tool. You CAN leave the database in the processor and upgrade that particular processor - which will in turn upgrade or migrate the database. Of course, this is not possible when going to rel 7, since it uses a physically different processor from the previous releases.

True,
But if you use PC Administration you will have a record of the exact programming on the R3. Use this a a guide when programming the R7. Going to a R6 as skip suggested is worthy of consideration, not unless you are trying to buy a few ports on a full system. I have a customer in that position right now. ( I want them to go to iP Office or Magix now)

After much research and all of your posts, I believe the best thing for my customer to do is simply upgrade to R6 using an upgrade card. They mostly wanted the dual line caller ID more than anything else. I just installed a stand alone R7 that worked really well, and I thought I had to go to R7 to get the dual line Caller ID, but R6 has that feature.

Now if I can just get the PC administration software to work properly so I can save the info to my PC. I have been fighting that problem with no success for a couple months.

Thanks to all who responded. This is a great site!

Hi jjdad,
In a pinch, you can hook up an 18D to each on 10 or 11 and step through it all. A real pain. A new, unused backup restore card placed in the R3 will update the software, save the translation on the card and restore it on the R6. The power supply has been improved on the R6 along with some port circuits (that I know of). So it is worthwile to use the new processor and avoid the problems in the future.
