hi

I am looking for the procedure to take the backup and restore of Upfront.

(if in case server crashes, ways to restore the existing newbox settings)

regards/Sudhi

Sudhi,
I think what you want is catered for by use of the upfpack and upfunpack applications.Upfpack is backup; Upfunpack is restore. They take only a short time to run, that you may think they have not worked!
I had these details mailed to me by another user, but used them to successfully back up and restore our configuration.
NB: These applications will not copy any themes you have created.
If you have version 6, then your install location will be cer2

Upfront pack up
1. Go Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Services and ensure that Cognos Upfront Data Store service, Cognos Ticket Server, and LDAP directory server services are running.
2. Go Start --> Programs --> Cognos BI --> Upfront Server Administration.
3. In the Connect dialog box, type the Upfront Server Computer Name <servername> and then click Connect.
4. Log on as required.
5. Click the server icon in the left pane. Or, to stop all Upfront servers, click the Upfront server group icon in the left pane.
6. From the Actions menu, click Stop.
7. Close the Upfront Server Administrator.
8. Go Start --> Run.
9. Type in: <install drive>Program Files\Cognos\cer3\bin\UpfPack.exe
10. If prompted, type a user name that lets you administer the NewsIndex, and then press Enter. 11.
If prompted, type your password and press Enter. The UpfPack Utility runs.
Note: If you have customized Upfront with templates, etc., it will be necessary to consult the How to Move your Application PDF file to ensure these custom settings are not lost.
12. Move the following file UpfPackage.pkg from <install drive>\Program Files\Cognos\cer1\bin to your backup folder.
13. UpfPack creates a log file called UpfPack.log. You may review its contents.
14. When errors are encountered an error log called UpfPackError.log is generated in <install drive>\Cognos\cer3\bin.
The presence of this file would indicate that problems developed.

Upfront Unpack:
(make sure all cognos services and servers are stopped first)
1. Copy UpfPackage.pkg from your backup folder to <install
drive>\Program Files\Cognos\cer3\bin folder.
2. Go Start --> Run.
3. Type in: <install drive>Program Files\Cognos\cer3\bin\UpfUnPack.exe
4. If prompted, type a user name that lets you administer the NewsIndex, and then press Enter.
5. If prompted, type your password, and then press Enter. The UpfUnPack Utility runs.
6. UpfPack creates a log file called UpfUnPack.log. You may review its contents.
7. When errors are encountered, an error log called UpfPackError.log is generated in <install drive>\Cognos\cer3\bin.
The presence of this file would indicate that problems developed.
