Updating .xls file

I'm trying to update an excel (.xls) file through my web page using asp to make an ado connection. I can open and read to the file just fine, and I can write to it with no problem. When I update however and it makes the changes permanent the file quadruples in size. It goes from 640k to about 2.5 meg, and it's all corrupt.

Does anybody have any idea what would be causing this?
