Updating Windows Media Player

I was helping a friend who has XP. His media player was ver 8.0. We had downloaded the 9.0 update and I got confused and stopped the install of ver 9.0. When I go to try to reinitialize the update, Windows Media Player indicates it has the latest version, but Help|About tells me that it's still at ver 8.0. How can we complete the update to ver 9.0?

As I won't see my friend for a while, can I still use System Restore as part of the process to remove Windows Media Player 9 and restore and reinstall Player 8? He will probably add files and e-mail messages before we could get back together.
