When or how does VSS update the original or raw VFP files?
When I join the SS project the form I'm looking at is up to date. Check it in and check in the project so its updated no problem. Now, open the project outside VSS and it still shows an out of date form! WT-#$@#$ ? = WhatTheHeck? <g>
I want to be very sure I choose the right update function if that is what I need to do. I did that last nite after another crash (SP4?) and lost hours of work. If by original you mean master copy (stored in VSS database), it should only be updated upon Check-In, IIRC.

Now, open the project outside VSS and it still shows an out of date form!

Was this on the same machine the project was checked-in on? If not, you've gotta do a Get Latest Version.

You may wanna post exactly what you did:
ie,
1. Checked-Out files to Working Folder
2. Made changes to local copy.
3. Checked-In files.

lost hours of work

Been there, done that. I can live with these mistakes provided I am fault; however, I get furious when these mistakes are beyond my control.(ie, power failure,pc crash) [sig]
Jon Hawkins
jonscott8@yahoo.com

The World Is Headed For Mutiny.....When All We Want Is Unity. - Creed[/sig]

Jon, I did exactly the steps you list. Also I found out after you check-in the files (#3) and close the project step 4 would be check in the project in the VSS client. This is weird to me. You can do this from VFP's Tool menu's Run Microsoft Visual SourceSafe w/o having to fire up the client from a shortcut or whatever.

Back to my question, if I join the SS project from another computer, no problem. If I open the VFP project w/o source control and its old. Perhaps this is by design. The project started w/o source control and was added to SS later. So by design the original VFP SCX etc files will remain the same? Hmm I guess the new SCX et al files are now in the Working Directory along with the VSS files. That's what I meant by original or raw. I admit I was unspecific with 'original' or 'raw' but not sure how to describe them. Since you probably never want to open or touch the 'original' VFP project outside SS anyway (I was just curious. Actually while writing this it came to me the vfp files are in the local working folder now along with the vss added files and no longer in the original place the project started before joining VSS) this leads me to my second question.

Question #2
How do I join my SS project from another location like with my laptop? My laptop has VSS client and currently hooked up to my home network's hub and works fine here joining the SS project. The SS project database is located on my main desktop computer. (For now at least but the SS db will get moved to a server at the office sometime). Do I use FTP? A VPN? I have to have some way to Browse to the SS db.

Question #3 (Maybe should be a FAQ or Tip)
There was some major update to VSS a while back before SP4. What was weird is I think you had to contact M$ to get it and I think it wasn't free but it greatly sped up opening a project and other things. Did SP4 include that? Do you know what I'm referring to? I read about it at the Wiki but it was so wordy and kinda confusing and I wasn't using VSS then so I skimmed over it. If noone here knows the bottom line or what the heck I'm talking about on this :) I'll go back and read all of it.

Thanks

wow something went wrong and I posted the same thing with litte change between them above. I was in web site found please wait world so hit escape made changes and hit submit again. Guess the first one took anyhow.

On Q2 above I realize you can just work offline and check in after you're done with your work on your laptop. I need to know how to update the project from a remote computer.
Thanks again sorry so wordy. I'll hit Submit Post only once <g> [sig]
John Durbin
john@johndurbin.com
MCP Visual FoxPro
