Updating Statistics

If you have DB that's set to auto-update statistics, when would you need to update statistics manually or in a maintenance plan?

Jeff,

I update stats weekly, during a time period of low usage. It may be overkill but I just want to make certain SQL Server is aware of the best access paths.
