I am looking to update existing records in one table with the variable data that exists in another table's field. I tried an update query but it seems only to like either manually entered values or calculations performed on the original table. Am I using the right query and if so/not howe do I do it ?

Your table must be related/joined on fields where at least one side of the join is a primary key. Otherwise you could probably use dlookup() and one table. It would help if you shared some table and field names and possibly your attempt at the update sql.
