Updating DTDs : Way to auto-update legacy XML?

My group is still in XML infancy and as a result, still has frequent DTD/ENT updates.

I know we can use XSL to update our legacy XML so it will adhere to new DTDs, but is there any way to automate this?

Ideally, I'd like a tool that maps the old DTD to the new DTD and automatically inserts new required tags, while alerting writers to the changes that are made so they are aware of changes that will need text added to them.

Does this seem logical? Anybody have recommendations about how you've handled this kind of issue in the past?

Thanks.
