Updating a External Source (AS400)

Is the AS400 running a different database platform? I hear them mentioned once in a while but I must admit I have never worked with one, or any type of mainframe system.
If all else fails, you could export your table, put it in SQL, do your update, then export again and load to the AS400. I would imagine it's possible to set up a connection though.
