Updating a Database with new fields

I need to know if there is a way to update an Access 97 database where I have added new code and ADDED additional fields in the tables. The database is in two files the code and back-end data file. I really need to know if there is a simple way to update the back-end file without losing any of the data that has already been inputted. The process needs to be automatied as the users end only has the run-time engine for the application.
