I normally run my machines with updates switched off. Two days ago, my machine rebooted in the middle of the night after it had installed updates that I did not request. When I checked, automatic updates had been switched on. The same thing happened on 3 other windows 7 machines that had been left on overnight.

Is there some process somewhere in W7 that switches automatic updates on even when you've specifically told it you do not want any updates?

Have you installed any other Microsoft programs in the last few days since you have turned off Windows Updates? There is some conjecture that a program like Microsoft Security Essentials when installed may, at that time, turn on Automatic Updates.

The only one I remember installing is MS Office. That may have switched it on.

as Linney mentioned, there are some Windows updates that will turn the Automatic Update scheduler on, upon installation...

and this is what Linney referred to:

These stealth updates are just as bad as Gordon Brown's stealth taxes. Don't know why they can't just say
Your automatic updates have been switched off - would you like them to be switched on
and leave us to make the decision.
