Updated images relinked, but no changes!

I converted over 60 fairly small RGB jpegs in my ID doc to grayscale yet they are showing up in color. I started working from a server but have packaged locally and relinked these images (leaving no place for ID to pull RGB's from) yet I still get color. In Photoshop, using "save as" and re-placing istead of just "save" worked to fix most. Now when I do level adjustments on these and "save as" I still do not see changes.
What gives? IS there a cache file somewhere? Printing is supposed to pull from the image file, why no change even when printing?
Any help is appreciated.

Try this...
go on window palette, select link
click on your linked images and click on the update link button on the bottom of the link window. The icon is a kind of floppy disk with a right arrow... Hope that help you. Sorry about my poor english.!
