Update slows down searches?

Hi:

We have a long-running update process on our SQL2000 that seems to slow down searches (all with no-lock hints, dealing with the tables not involved in the update). How can it be possible while CPU is still on 30% of its capacity, reading from SQL buffer being 99,9%? Where we should look for a bottleneck?
