Could somebody please help me with this? I have been trying to install SMS Secondary site to a Windows 2000 Server. I have already finished with the installation and configuration of site settings. The problem is that when I checked on the System Management icon under the Control Panel, I saw under the components tab that it has not been completed yet. What I did was go to the Sites Tab and clicked on the Update Configuration button but I received the "Update Sites Failed" message. Does this mean that my installation has not been successful after all? Should I reinstall the site again? Thanks.

Secondary sites can be tricky to set up. One little entry mistake in the setup wizard usually causes the site creation to fail. SMS_LAN_SENDER component status messages may be helpful in figuring out why the failure occured, and these logs are helpful too: sender.log, smsprov.log, hman.log, sched.log, despool.log, replmgr.log.

I've found that when the update fails you need to first uninstall the secondary site (Site Hierarchy / Primary Site / Right click Secondary site / select Delete / Next / De-install the site). Wait ten minutes or so then check the secondary site server for the SMS folder, which should be gone. If smsbootstrap files still exist, then I've found that running the SMS uninstall off the CD for the secondary site is needed. Once this is complete you can go back and set up the secondary site again.

If anyone else has comments on how to successfully set up secondary sites, and what to do if there is a problem, I'd love to know! :)

Are you attached through Terminal Services? If this is your problem. Try going to the actual console and see if you get the same result. This isn't supported through Terminal Services.

Could you expand on "this isn't supported through Terminal Services"? I've done all my secondary site testing through TS and have had some complete successes and many partial failures. I know that SQL Server setup v7 and prior had TS install issues, but this shouldn't be an issue for secondary sites.

Thanks.
