Update java

I'm having problems updating java on a computer.

If I install the latest release from the internet, afterwards if I run java -version, it still says that it is version 1.4

I've uninstalled all of the versions that I could find in the Add/Remove programs GUI and when I ran the msi cleanup utility, it didn't list any java installations. It still lists 1.4 as the active version...

Is there a way to update the java installation on this computer?

This is a Windows XP sp3 computer.

What is Java 1.4?

My Java in the About windows says -

JAVA 6
Version 6 update 11 (Build 1.6.0_11-b03)

Are you downloading the right Java for XP and Windows?

There might even by an update 12 at Sun, but that has been offered to me in Vista yet?
