I don't do a lot with the J series phones. But there is one site we are helping out that just got a new 11.1 system and added some J 179 phones.

From what I have been told, it sounds like the J179 phones are installing as basic SIP phones and not the full featured H323 telephones. I have not been able to log in remote yet, I will do so this morning, but if I recall from previous times, there was a file missing for these phones. I think it was a case of adding the 46xx file to the embedded files on the SD card, or am I thinking of something else?

Just trying to job my memory on these phones.

They are covered separately in the Knowledge

J100 Series 'Stimulus' Phones
Apart from the J129 (see J129), IP Office supports other J100 Series phones using an operating mode referred to as 'stimulus' mode. In that mode they support the full set of IP Office phone menus.

The J169/J179 SIP phones are supported from Release 11.0. (For earlier releases they are supported using H323 firmware, see Pre-R11.0 H.323 Support.)

The J139 is supported from R11.0 SP1.

The J159 is supported from FP4 SP1.

The J189 is supported from R11.1 FP1.

They can largely be installed using the generic installation process. which provides the phones with the required J100Supgrade.txt and 46xxsettings.txt files.

What I ran into on one of the Release 11 versions was the 46xxsettings.txt file was either missing or corrupt. It was failing to load. Not sure if the same issue is going on here. I am pretty sure it is 11.1 software though.

The J179 SIP is fully featured on IP Office and is the recommended configuration for IPO 11. You want to use the auto-configured 46xxsettings.txt. Any custom settings go in a 46xxspecials.txt.

gwebster, can you clarify?? The last J179 I installed on a R11 had almost no features in SIP mode. It was only when we converted it to H323 that things appeared to be normal. This was I believe one of the very first iterations of R11. The system now is R11.1 I beleive. Still waiting on remote access so I will try to provide additional info when I have it.

Might be worth noting H323 is not supported on 11.0

•IP Office R11.0 and higher
These systems only support J139/J159/J169/J179 phones running SIP firmware. Existing systems with the J169 and J179 phones running H.323 emulation firmware will require the phones to be converted to SIP firmware after the upgrade of the IP Office to R11.0.

I am sorry I am confusing everyone, including myself. Its been a long time since I had to do this. I greatly appreciate the help and feedback! I am starting to think, after reading the info that you guys are providing, that the J179 phone didn't have any features until the SIP firware was loaded? That could have been the original issue. Does this sound correct? And then once we loaded the SIP firmware all the buttons and such became available?

There are configuration parameters required to have a fully-featured SIP J179 on IPO. If you happen to use a custom 46xxsettings.txt without those parameters then you will not get those features. Thus always use the autogenerated one.

The J179 here has all the features AFAIK and shouldn't have the SIP firmware out of the box?

Looks like the original system was an R11 and when the vendor upgraded to R11.1, it appears to have not loaded the upgrade correctly. Took it up one more level on the R11.1 and it seems to have fixed the issue with the phones. I appreciate all the help and responses from you guys!! thank you!
