It used to be that when I inserted a Win98 CDROM that was a newer version than what was installed, Windows would ask me if I wanted to update from that CDROM. But it had a checkbox, "Don't Ask Me Again", which I checked. But now I DO want to be asked again.

How can I get Win98 to update itself from that CDROM?

You can use Windows explore/select your CD drive and run the setup.exe by double clicking on it.

Yeah, but doesn't Setup overwrite everything, including the registry? I just want to update anything that needs it, and have a system that runs identically, with no tweaking or re-installs needed. That's what was implied by the dialog box that used to come up.

keyer,

If you receive that message, it's a newer version of operating system, say from Win98 first edition to Wion98 second edition.

you cannot just update anything that needs it

To enable auto-insert notification, right-click on My Computer, choose properties, click the Device Manager tab, double-click on CD-ROM, highlight your CD-ROM and click properties, then click the Settings tab and put a check in the box for auto-insert notification.
