Update Contacts

Hi,

Could someone please help with the following?

We are using WSS not Portal. I have imported some contacts from a Global Address list. Is there a way to keep the Sharepoint list updated with the Active directory information?

What I mean is, if I change my telephone number in Active Directory, the Sharepoint contact does not update. Is it possible make this happen automaticly (without using Portal)?

Hello,

As far as I know the contact list that is imported and placed in WSS does not have any connections or links whatsoever to the global adress list (or Active directory). So the list does not do any lookups once it is created.

It is the same if you chose to import for example an excel spreadsheet, once that is done, the created list in sharepoint does not have any connections with the original spreadsheet you imported from.

I would think that you will have to use the Portal to get that functionality "out-of-the-box".

Might however be possible to create a webpart or something that can do lookups in the A.D but I am not a developer/programmer so my knowledge there is very limited.

We're struggling with the same thing. For some crazy reason, the developers of WSS/SPS thought that it would be preferable to add users/groups from the Exchange address books and not the source of domain login authority. Ridiculous. I understand that one might not want to open AD to Joe Site Admin, but it only forces one to dual-manage permissions.

If anyone can point out a custom Web part that gets around this, we're all for it.

The Exchange Contacts would be fine for me providing it was able to be updated automaticly.

Update: you can set up audiences for portal items that are updated through crawls of AD. Not sure if this is a viable solution for site-level access; we're still playing with it and NB it's not available in WSS.
