Hello,
I will configure update and upgrade at a lot of clients, virus scan sp1 v4.5.0.534 is installed, by script. My problem: to configure the timesetting for update and upgrade by script. I look for a file and in the registry, but I only find the setting for the update/upgrade path ( unc or ftp ).

Use ePO. Much better than running a script.

It is easy to do via the registry. I've rolled out site location changes to ~4,000 users this way. We switched from centralized updating to regional updating to the closest regional server.

I also enabled a weekly system scan to be done at 10PM. Since then a policy has been enacted to shut down PC's daily to conserve energy, so I had to switch times to working hours.

The biggest thing that snagged me up was that I was making the change in the registry yet it was not being reflected. It took me a bit to figure out that you MUST do a net stop on the avsync service, make the change and then restart it after you make the change.

EPO is something that I want to bring online, but my schedule doesn't allow the time right now to evaluate it. I basically designed and implemented the AV process for the entire agency without using any tools other than the customized installation designer. Matt

I have been attempting to do this myself, editing the MSI for the registry changes. I have been successfull in seeing my new settings show up in the Console, BUT my tasks are doubling (there are 2 Vshield tasks, 2 autoupdate, 2 autoupgrade, etc). Has anyone else seen this happen? It doesnt seem to matter where you add the reg entries, as far as the features in the MSI go, in that I see the same results from 'scheduler' as 'system scan' etc..

Can anyone shed any light on this?
TIA!

I too am trying to set up autoupdate schedule in the registry on win98, with virus scan 4.5.1 SP1. Which reg key do I need? I have searched for ages and cannot find it.
Any help will be appreciated...
Thanks,

Pete

I ended up with a working solution by building a clean machine, with only Windows & VirusScan on it. Then, I exported the entire HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Associates reg tree, and pulled the reg file back in to the Mcafee Installation Designer (NAI's MSI editor for this app). To be safe, double-check your reg file for user/computer names that will not apply to yourm target system.

I repeated this process for a half-dozen sites, and they all are up and running so no issues.

Good Luck.

Network Associates has a fabulous piece of software called the Installation Designer. What you do is install McAfee on a clean machine, and set the update/upgrade locations and any scan tasks and how you want everything scheduled. Basically build yourself the "ideal" machine. Run the installation designer, and it packages the product into a customized MSI file. Use the same filename that comes default and setup.exe will use that customized MSI file.

So that I didn't need to do separate packages for all the offices across the state, after the install of the product, I run the registry patches to update the site locations. The standard install package is distributed to all regional servers, and I just make the registry modification based upon which install server they select.

The key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Associates\TVD\Shared Components\McUpdate\CurrentVersion\Update\Update Site1

Of course there is also an upgrade key which you'll see in that area as well. Like I said before, make sure you stop and start services if you are making the change on the fly. Matt
