Can I run up2date without downloading anything or installing anything? I want to view the updates only.

What would the switch string be?

Your system should have the manual page for up2date installed. The information UnixJunky provided, plus other information, can be accessed using your machine's "man" function:

man up2date

the -l switch in the man pages states:

Output a list of packages which have been updated and available for retrieval/installation.

This implies that the update occurred. I want to check what would be updated before updating the up2date database.

I don't think that's what the manual page implies. I interpret it is "Output a list of packages which have been updated on the update server and are available for retrieval/installation."

I just did:

up2date -l

The return was a list of three packages. None were installed.

I then did:

up2date -u

And the same three packages were listed. This time they were retrieved and installed.
