I am new to linux, Needing to expand an archive *.tar.Z
I have tried tar -xf but it says it is not a valid tar file...
Thanks
-Chris

Chris,
You have a tar file that has been compressed after it was 'tarred'. So first enter: uncompress *.tar.Z , then enter: tar -xvf *.tar.

Or you can issue "tar -xvfz *.tar.Z" to uncompress and untar the whole thing. If you want to test the untar first to makesure it goes where you want before you uncompress and untar it do "tar -tvfz *.tar.Z"

The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
