unzipped php.... how do i configure

im on a linux running apache trying to install php
I know i am supp. to type "./config" but i get errors:
"no acceptable cc found in $PATH". Whats going on? In addition it needs to be installed to run with a MS SQL Server 2000 on another machine.

Actually, I've always had great success with the script named "configure" on Linux. ______________________________________________________________________
