UNWANTED PORN ATTACK HISTORY 1

It was suggested from the Windows 2000 section I should post this problem here


Due to the slowness of Trend Micro Internet Security Suite 2007 when using Firefox 3 I had to send Trend a report with the use of their software program. Their technician sorted out the problem but said my computer had visited some porn sites. As I daily clean my browser history and have several other programs I run weekly to find malware and ad-ware, I was astounded to find this history on my computer when I had never visited the sites.

The report found the history headed "hosts" then 127.0.0.1 followed by the site address. I cannot find this information on my computer to remove it. Has anyone else had this problem? Trend said I should re-format my hard drive which means many days re-installing all the software. Surely there is an easier way to clean out the sites?

Are you saying your host's file is full of sites with 127.0.0.1 as the address? Have you run Ad-Aware? This isn't your history, this is a trick that Ad-Aware does to block those sites. 127.0.0.1 is called your "home address." Anything with this address will just return to you own computer. (Think of Dorothy saying, "There's no place like 127.0.0.1. There's no place like 127.0.0.1.")

I have NOT looked at your HiJack listing so something may yet so up there.

I do have Ad-Aware 2008 loaded but only scan my computer with it once a week. I do not have it running other than the weekly scan. The software Trend asked me to run the report is AIDA32 and the txt report is nearly 2mb before zipping it.
I did run the report on my second computer which has Zonealarm suite but no Ad-Aware 2008 and found the same kind of sites on that. It is this host file that I am trying to find to delete all those sites.

This indicates you have run spybot search and destroy. One of the features the program has is to immunuze.When you immunize it creates a list of known bad sites in the HOST file and sets the host file with an entry
127.0.0.1 Name_of_Bad_site

If at anytime your computer tries to go to one of the listed sites it redirects the site to your own computer (127.0.0.1)
Which effectively blocks getting to the sites.If the Aida 32 file lists the HOST file as the location of the porn site then unfortunately i would be forced to assume the person who told you that you had been to the porn sites by those entries is not aware of what a HOST file does.

Thanks ticscousin. If I understand you correctly, I am safe from these sites on the 127.0.0.1 due to Spybot. It was the Trend technician that said my computer had visited these sites and he said I should re-format my hard drive.

I take it I can feel safe?

If they are in fact in the HOST file then yes you should be safe.

The above link is to an explanation of the HOST file and has a viewer that can be downloaded so you can view the host file.

The HOST file is stored as a hidden file in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\ETC

but that Trend Micro Tech, needs to go back to Pre-School, the host file is one of the first things you learn about "how to keep your PC clean"...

Moveit - your log is clean, except of two items which are harmless (file missing - probably either got deleted or quarantined by an AV/AM)... if you want you can deleted them or leave them...
