I am connecting to the Internet via IE. When the pc makes the connection to my homepage, whether it be Lycos, Yahoo, google etc..... I get a series of popup windows appear which themselves contain spam and junk messages. How can I stop these pop ups appearing? They never appeared in the past! and are nothing to do with me or the websites I am accessing! They are the same pop up windows every time.

Thanks in advance.

Adam.

Hi mate,

Check out
Most likely you have installed adware bundled with a program, this will scan your system and find it for you.

Hope this helps Wullie

adambmw, hiya. This is what I use as a popup stopper, its from a company called 'panicware', and its great...
The program stops all kinds popups that span from sites like hotmail, iwon, yahoo, etc...
This is the companies site: And you can dl a FREE copy of it here: I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

If you install this software does it stop all pop-ups?

because If you make a site that has pop-ups within the site does it stop them? Regards

BigBadDave, it stops ALL forms of popups...so far, I've had no popup appear...and i've used this for more then a year... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

So if you use pop-up as part of your site for launching images etc it stops them?

thats bad you shouldn't restrict a sites functionality Regards

The popup stopper is meant for people who want the annoying popups to stop...
As far as the sites functionality is concerned, its also not a good idea to annoy users by having your images popup in their browsers... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

Those pop ups may be annoying, but they make money and help keep some of the free sites up and running.

They are most annoying when you do not have the slightest interest in what they are advertising. But they are not so annoying if you are in fact interested in their product.

So one person's annoying pop up is another person's key to saving money on a product.

Oh what am I saying, those pop ups drive me nuts...mike

Popups are annoying period.
Some sites have a popup form, or a popup information, or other 'useful' tidbits in the form of popups, and even though they [webmasters, the company] mean well, the fact remains that popups are annoying.
If its ads or graphics, etc. that a company has on its site in the form popups should really fit into the site itself...you can always fit content into you're site...always!! Especialy if the content is site related, or useful to the customers, then it outta be in the site, and not appear as popups...
With popup stoppers becoming more and more popular, chances that some popups (that a company deems as useful) would be stooped by these popup stoppers, thereby deafeating the whole purpose of creating the popups...
But to each its own... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

Hi guys,

I am with Dave here, I think that it is pretty daft that a web designer is stopping the fuctionality of another designers work.

If this was likely to do damage to your system, then fair enough but stopping pop-up windows is not going to protect you from anything in the slightest security-wise.

Pop-up windows can be a great tool if used correctly. I use pop-up windows on my site to provide access to certain functionality of the site. If a user blocks pop-ups, then there are parts of my sites that they cannot use.

There are times that pop-ups are needed, I personally would not change the parent window just to show a few lines of text which could easily be placed in a pop-up window sized to fit the content.

How can you be all for people upgrading to the latest and greatest browsers so that they can have full functionality of a site when you block parts of a browsers functionality yourself?

Hope this helps Wullie

Didn't mean to open a huge can of worms guys.....!

Just wondered if this 'feature' could be disabled simply without extra software, as easily as it has appeared?!

Adam.

There's a number of sides to it really.

When surfing the net it can be better to block these pop-up ads. Do you ever get stuck in one of those pop-up traps? It happened to me again today! I close one advertising window and 3-4 more open up and as I try to close those windows more and more windows keep opening up! It's really
#%$£@ŧ annoying!! Webmasters who design that should be shot! :)

On the other hand pop-ups can be handy and used tastefully can add to a site!

Also, on a couple of sites I am working with large images, its just not practical to put them in the page so I have them in a pop-up BUT its not automatic pop-up, the user has the choice to open them or not!

How about pop-unders? :)

Ok BigBadDave, Wullie, you guys are misunderstanding me...
In no way did I say that you shouldn't use popups...if you read all of my posts, you'll see that I was only stating my opinions from the users P.O.V. and not the designers...
Some sites do use popups verry wisely...to display definitions, command helps, tidbits, etc...but the majority of the sites out there use popups for popup ads, popup polls, etc., functionality that users get annoyed (once again, USERS) and have no bearing on the actual functionality of the site itself...i'm thinking from both P.O.V. here, not just the designers...
BigbadDave, in no where did I say you shouldn't use popups, you just jumped to the conclusion that if I reccomended a good popup stopper, I was giving a hidden message to designers to not use popups...
You just can't look at a few select sites and say that based on these sites popups are good/bad...
Popups are good in certain situations: like a bank site, college site, orginazational site...but to use popups like the way iwon.com or msnbc.com or aol.com uses is verry annoying...if I didn't have the popup stopper I would be closing windows everytime I clicked on a link... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...
