I'm receiving unwanted windows autentication prompts when accessing a Sites on our Sharepoint 2003 SP2 Portal Server

Previously, I performed the following:

1. Opened IIS Manager
2. Opened the properties of the Portal Web Site
3. Directory Security Tab -> Authentication and Access Control -> Edit
4. Changed the Authentication method to "Enable anonymous access".
5. iisreset

As you might know, this caused the Portal Site to be unavailable so I performed the following:

1. Opened IIS Manager
2. Opened the properties of the Portal Web Site
3. Directory Security Tab -> Authentication and Access Control -> Edit
4. Unchecked the Authenication method for "Enable anonymous access".
5. iisreset

I can get to the top level Portal Site again.

But now my problem is that whenevener any domain account (regardless of their Sharepoint permissions) attempts to access any "site" or "subsite" they are prompted with a connect to server, Windows Autentication window. Simply cancelling the window allows individuals access to the site.

I've made sure that "Integrated Windows Authentication" is checked as the authentication method.

When accessing the top level Portal site, the server connection windows authentication prompt does NOT appear.

When opening documents within any site a authentication prompt does NOT appear.

If a domain account is a member of the Portal Server's local Administrators group, the Windows authentication windows does not appear.

My guess is that by enabling and then removing the anonymous access that persmissions changed somewhere.

What do I need to do to correct this problem?

Do you want to have any anonymous access allowed on the site?

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.

I do not have anonymous access allowed enabled on the site.

What is the end goal of what you are setting up?

try this. in internet explorer go to tools / internet options / security / go to custom level / scroll all the way down to the bottom and check allow login with current username and password
