I am running WP 9 with SP3 on a Compaq Deskpro Pentium II with 128 meg of RAM...Windows 2000 work station.

I suddenly started getting "unsupported file type" when trying to load ANY graphics, including copy and paste graphics from another program.

I did reisntall WP9 and SP 3 to no avail.

Can anyone help?

I see no responses to your problem of inserting graphics in WP9. This has just started happing to me. I get "Detected File Format is not Supported" when I try to inset a graphic (.jpg) from a file. I'm using Corel Office 2000 with WP9 build 883 (Service Pack 4) running on Windows XP Pro. TIA for any responses.

I am running a Dell 1.5 Ghz machine with Windows 2000 SP-3 and trying to insert a .jpg file into a document. The .jpg was taken with a digital camera. The .jpg file opens just fine in Word 2k and other view programs. I have tried to unlead Office 2002 and reload with all options used. This has not worked. I have used other programs to open and save as new .jpg file and this does not work. I keep getting the same "Document Format Not Supported" message. I have not tried reverting to WordPerfect 9. Surely Corel is aware of this and has at least a work around. Am failing fast and don't want to give up my WordPerfect

Did anyone ever find an answer for this problem? I am running WordPerfect 10 on an XP Pro system and when I try it insert a Tiff I am getting the following message

unsupported file format detected

Could really use some help.

Have you tried Insert, File or Insert Object instead of Insert, Graphic? I don't often have a problem inserting graphics (WP9), but this seems to work around the problem when it does arise.

I had exactly the same problem with WP 9 when I converted to a Windows XP machine. It drove me crazy for months, but then I found Barry MacDonnell's tip site and the following solution.

Why the heck graphics and indexing are connected is beyond me, but this solution works.

I prefer to have indexing OFF on my machine and I found that this solution works even if one turns off the Indexing Service itself AFTER allowing it to index a disk.

Jeremy

Problems inserting (non-WPG) graphic images into WordPerfect on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP system?

From Charles Rossiter, Corel C_Tech:

In both Win2000 and WinXP, to be able to insert non-wpg graphics, you have to enable indexing service on your NTFS partition, although you can disable it overall.

Double-click My Computer to get a list of partitions. Right-click on the partition with the graphics. Select Properties. Check on the option "Allow index service to index this disk ...".

In Win2000 to disable indexing service overall, you can do Windows Start, Search, Files or Folders, if needed click on Search Options to open that sub-dialog. If Indexing Service is enabled, you can set it to disabled, which should over-ride the option for the particular partition which has to be enabled.

In WinXP to disable indexing service overall, you can do Windows Start, Search, Files or Folders, click Change Preferences. Now click Without Indexing Service and select the option "No, do not enable indexing service", which should over-ride the option for the particular partition which has to be enabled.

Glenn:

I still haven't found anyone who knows what's going on with WP and graphics un-supported file format. I suspect it has to do with Windows associations but all my experiments along those line don't prove anything. It's probably a corrupted WP configuration file and if I knew which one to delete and let WP rebuild it I'd do it.

In the meantime I've been using MS Word when I need to insert .jpg graphics.

Anyone have any ideas?

WAIT!!! I just read the post from jgbutler (1/4/03) that has a solution from Charles Rossiter, CorelC_Tech that may work. I'll be trying it right after I send this out [2thumbsup]

I've been following a thread about this on Corel's newsgroups. One key to the puzzle is that this only happens on NTFS partitions. If you're using a FAT32 file system, you won't have this problem.

Also, I found, when applying this fix to a second computer that DID have indexing turned ON, that turning it OFF and then back ON again solved the problem.

Jeremy

I have reverted to Corel Office 2000 and am not having the problem with the insert. I did a custom install and installed everything in Office 2002 and 2000 each time that I installed it. I am using a FAT32 in the Windows 2000. I have tried turning the indexing off and that did not work. I tried to turn the indexing back on and that did not work to solve the problem. I guess I will have to stay with Office 2000 SP-4 until someone with a better idea comes along.

I have the same error message popping up when I copy text/graphics, from WP9 to Word 2000. This computer is a member of a domain. I have service pack 3_2 installed for WP9. Office is completely updated with the latest service packs as well.

I did find that when the user that signs onto the problem computer is given Domain Admin rights the problem goes away. When the given the Domain Admin rights, go to Save As and select file type. Notice all of the different file types available, including Word file types. When the Domain Admin rights are taken away, the only file types available are WP file types. I find this problem very confusing. I'm going to try the indexing solution above, and will keep everyone posted if this fixes the problem.

after reading all these posts about "unsupported file format", I had to let you know of my own issue. I have Wordperfect 2002 (v. 10) and a Windows 2000 network. We can create WP documents, save them with no errors but the next time we try to pull them up, we get "unsupported file format" we are NOT using graphics files when doing this, only WP documents. Am wondering if the same solution regarding indexing could also help us. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate a response.

I have already "indexed" the wp docs partition on my server. We are running NTFS partitiosn on all.

jansapp,

Did the 'indexing' solution above solve your problems? I, also have a win2k network with NTFS partitions and am receiving unsupported file format errors when attempting to reopen recently created Word Perfect files. None of the files that I'm working with involve graphics.

The unsupported file format issue is one I re-encountered recently when I installed WP on a new computer with NTFS partitions (the problem does not seem to affect FAT32 partitions) and I couldn't remember how I'd fixed it before!

After much searching, I came back to my posts here, BUT I also found additional information at WordPerfect Universe that suggests that format issues could be related to the Windows temp directory.

GreenMind wrote:

I was having a similar issue and the work around did not work. No matter how much I tinkered with the indexing Word Perfect would not insert a .jpg or .gif file.

Ends up I had to change the location of the users temp directory. By default in Windows 2000 it is set to %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp. When I changed it to C:\TEMP (you also have to create the folder) Word Perfect worked flawlessly.

I believe it has something to do with the way the image filters work with the files and the file permissions within the user profiles not being relaxed enough to allow the program to use it effectively.

Hope that's some assistance.

To fix this problem, insert your WordPerfect® install CD and follow the instructions below:
WordPerfect Office 2000/2002:
1. Start the install for WordPerfect.
2. Place a dot by Add additional components and click Next.
3. Click next until you see the WordPerfect Conversion Filters window.
4. Ensure that there is a solid black check mark next to Conversion File Types.
NOTE: If the Conversion File Types window does not appear, this usually means that the filters are already installed on your system.
5. Click on the Next button, and follow through with the remainder of the installation.
