I've never used the built-in backup utility. You can schedule anything you'd like with the standard CRON tools, but you'd have to write your own script and decide how much reporting/logging you want.
About 90% of our Client's use Lone-Tar, which includes utilities to configure the scheduling and reporting.
I realize that doesn't answer your question, but it's something to think about. There are other utilities very similar to LoneTar which I've heard are execellent as well.
