Hi,

I am trying to send an email to a friend in Pakistan, but everytime I send the message it comes back saying that it was "unrouteable". What does this mean?

Thanks in advance. Biffo, the Godfather of making mistakes in life. Although, his Tek-Tips answers and questions are no mistakes.

That means that there was no DNS listed for the domain, for your friend's e-mail address, that could be found. joegz

What does this actually mean though in Lehmann's terms. What you have written makes no sense to me. lol. Biffo, the Godfather of making mistakes in life. Although, his Tek-Tips answers and questions are no mistakes.

Lets say you send an e-mail message to the address of johnsmith@hotmail.com. In this example hotmail.com is the domain name. So when you send your e-mail your mail server sends the message out and is received by the router it uses and asks the router "do you know who this is and what the address (IP address) is" . The router looks up the domain in it's DNS (Domain Name Suffix) table and will say yes the IP address 64.4.53.7 and sends the message on.

Or the router may not have it listed but sends it on to another router to see if it knows. Eventually if no router recognizes the domain name it returns the message back.

This is a very simplistic explanation but this is it in a nutshell. You need to verify if the address is accurate and if it is then your friends needs to check with his ISP. joegz
