Fact: Two PCs
Fact: OS- Windows 2000
Fact: Sohoware Auto sensing Hub
Fact: DSL connected to Sohoware
Fact: PCs connected to each other via SOHOware
Fact: Machine 1 is always connected to the internet
Fact: Machine 2 loses internet connection
Fact: Proxy Server software on Machine 1

Problem: I am able to share internet connection, and am able to ping both machines. However, the connectin between two machines does not stay for a long time and I get diconnected.
However, after some time automatically the connection starts. This keeps on happening on the second PC. The internet cannot be shared for more than 7 minutes on the second PC.

ANy help to this idiot willl be much appreicated
Thanks

It would be better if the hub was a switch..
if the router has nat and it is enabled.
than set the gateway for both pc's the same
and dont use proxy or internet share..
connect the router to the hub or switch
They both should have the same subnet mask also
example

router internal address 10.0.0.1

than pc 1 ip address 10.0.0.2 and subnetmask 255.255.255.0

than pc 2 ip address 10.0.0.3 and subnetmask 255.255.255.0

both will have a gateway address of 10.0.0.1

you may need to enter in dns as well.

hope it helped, if you need more info let me know.

Thanks for your help.

However, for my first machine, I cannot give a static address, as it procures a dynamic address directly from the Internet provider. I would appreciate if you could tell me a workaround

Thanks in advance

Is the SohoWare Hub manageable? In any case, it doesn't really matter.

You are directly connected to the Internet and you need to have some form of Firewall!!! And not just an application like Zone Alarm that runs on the individual PC's.

LinkSys makes an inexpensive FireWall that will be sufficient for your needs. So does Cisco, the PIX 501, which runs for about $300.

Using one of these products, you can setup the FireWall to NAT your inside addresses (Stated above by micro-lynx.com) and probably fix what ever problems you are currently having. Both products have the capability to setup the outside address for DHCP from your ISP.

If anything else, you will be protected from the bad people.

Good Luck.
