Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live 5.1 is giving me nightmares. Anyone seen this error when trying to reinstall the applications? All the icons are blank and none of the .exe files are there. It seems like all the supporting software exists but nothing seems to be registered properly or the .exe files are missing.

Update your AV software with the latest files, and do a virus search.

If none is found, then uninstall and reinstall Windows Media Player.

I did the AV update (none required) and performed a scan (nothing found). Then I disabled the AV loading on startup and real-time protection (added measure). About all I could do with Media Player was to drop it back to the original version. It gets real ugly when trying to completely uninstall it. Next, I updated it to the latest version (V9 I believe) and took the defaults on loading it. This did not fix the SBLive mixer (and subsequent applications) issues. I then tried a Repair on the SBLive package (choices are Modify; Repair; or Remove All) and 97% into it the application asked me to insert the SB Live CD and press OK. Well, I had to kill that because I had the CD in the tray and the system didn't recognize it (either tray - 2 CD drives).
Next, I copied the entire CD to a directory on one of the HDDs for a Safe Mode Repair (CDs are not seen in Safe Mode so I did it this way). I've already been this route several times but not without the Media player or AV thing.

I can't think of anything I haven't done to this system for it to not work. Installation of a sound card should "not" be this problematic - especially on Windows 98SE.

This stuff worked - once - initially. However, subsequent installs on the same machine are futile.

Here is what I get when I try running the Creative Surround Mixer:

CtDevcon.dll has returned an error. Mixer will now exit.

Now there's a life line for you. About all I can find on it are some blurbs in foreign languages on the Internet.

Any clues or advice may be helpful.

See if reinstalling Windows on top of itself helps.

If not, then you may have to bite the bullet, and reformat and reinstall Windows.
