unrecognized media

I have an ESX server and running backups from one of the instances. OS= Windows 2003 SP1, BE 10 Rev 5520.
I often got a message that the media in the drive is unrecognized media and that I need to erase the tape. After having done a long erase, I got the same issue. This is as well for new, unused tapes as for tapes already having used on other systems ( so, I am sure it's not a problem with the tape itself). Anyone an idea what can be the cause?
