You have two database files, the application file or frontend that you are opening with links to the tables in the other file, the backend.
Your backend has become corrupt. You should be able to open it directly and access should tell you it is corrupt and ask if you want to repair it... Say yes. While you are in the backend you might as well compact it to...

If you're sure the database was definately created in Access 97 then it might be corrupt. Try: for more help. ---
