unread mail icon does not change once mail read

When using win2k and Office 2k, reading mail should convert the unread mail icon into a read icon. This stopped working. User did not load any software-another words no clear cause effect established. Any idea how I can resolve this? I have tried to uninstall Office and reinstall but it (the problem) returns with a vengeance.

It's happening to me too. Running Outlook 2002 (XP) with Service Pack 3 on a Windows 2003 server box.

Have you tried detect & repair and/or cleanviews?
