Is there a freeware software package anywhere that I can use to unpackage .jar files?

why not use the 'jar' command that comes shipped with the jdk. Type 'jar' at command prompt (as long as the PATH env var is set up correctly) to get the options....

eg
jar -xmf myPackage.jar

You can also use WinZip to extract JAR files. I thin UnZip under Linux also works.
