Help!

I have a big problem with a blue screen with the message Unmountable_boot_volume STOP 0x000000ED...

My hardware: Epox EP-8kra2+, AMD Athlon XP2500+, Maxtor SATA 160Gb DiamondMax plus9, crucial 512MB PC2100..)

I suddenly got the blue screen the other day and can't start my computer regular, in safe mode, safe mode eith command promt.. it all ends in a blue screen with the same mesasge. I have tried to boot up the system with WinXP pro disk which is my os. but it don't detect my disk. if I press F6 at the beginning to load the drivers for the SATA disk I proceed to the regular install windows or start recovery console and so on. but if I choose one of the options everything stops when the system starts to examen the disk.. so i cant do anything more.. The computer is about 2monts old. everything worked just fine before this issue came up suddenly. I not installed any new software og hardware lately.
please!! do anyone have any tips???

regards

Whas your hardware listed in the setup of XP? If not, did you select the option to install your SATA drivers? Does your BIOS pick up the drive with its full capacity? you may want to update your bios if possible.

Yeah I'd say your only option is to repair the disk with chkdsk /r option. The unmountable boot drive means that there is a corruption in the boot volume and therefore windows will not mount the disk. Can you actually get to the Recovery Console? Thats the only place you will have the option to be able to do that. You could also try putting the disk into another computer with Windows XP and running a chkdsk on it from there. Since the drive isn't the boot drive in that computer it can be unmounted and repaired, that is if windows can even mount it. The only other option if that doesn't work is to use a program like NTFSDOS Professional which isn't free but its one of the best programs I've ever used in repairing NTFS disks from dos. It comes with its own chdksk type program called ntfschk that can scan and repair the disk from within dos. You can find information on it at or might have some info on it too.

JSAUCE you da man, this worked out perfect for me. The chkdsk /r on my Win_XP H_ED RC was all I needed to get up and running once again, however what could have caused this unmountable failure???

Probably Windows Update [smile]
