strife56x,

do you have a XP Install CD?

If so...insert it and boot and immediately press "F8" repeatedly until you get a DOS screen allowing boot device selection...select the cd/dvd drive and when prompted select the recovery console

The link will describe how to use the recovery console to edit boot.ini as you requested

if this fails
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

If you do not have the XP Install CD you should have a recovery CD from the Laptop mfg try that.

Have you an XP install CD (so you can get into recovery console). If not, if PC has floppy drive, then can get 6 floppy boot disks (to get into recovery console) from here

You haven't said what blue screen says or given any other clues - runing chkdsk /p from recovery console would be good (boot.ini entries don't cause blue screens).

also something like bartpe CD (google to find) might be helpfuil (but you need XP install CD to create one)

thanks for the response. i in fact do not have a boot disc. and the blue screen says unmountable_boot_volume then has the sector in which the error occured listed. thanks again for the help.

did you sort this?

running fixboot & fixmbr from recovery console would be worth trying if not.

If I can add my two penny worth. I've had this problem with a Toshiba laptop that had a bad battery. It had been trying to shut itself down due to lack of power when the battery failed totally. When mains power was applied and a re-boot attempted - it got a BSOD with the 'unmountable boot volume' error.

I fixed the problem by using SpinRite (from that found and fixed a corrupted sector on the HD.

hey wolluf i have considered that but i am not sure how to do it. what do i need? thanks

thanks i will do it when i get home, but can i do it on cd cause i dont have a floppy

wasn't sure from earlier posts if you have XP install Cd or not - if you have you can boot from that to get into recovery console. If not, I don't know how to convert 6 boot floppies into one CD - could you temporarily connect a floppy drive from elsewhere?

OK I NEED ALOT OF HELP SO PLZ LISTEN UP.
I have a gateway.
I bought it back in 2001...don't know the model

Best to start your own thread and not use caps as the start. As is, you are likely to be ignored.

Hi,
I just worked on a computer with that exact problem. I felt that the boot.ini file was damaged. Anyway, I did the repair, which worked to get the computer up one time and on a restart it failed again. I formatted the computer down, reinstalled the OS as well as the other software and the computer works like a charm again.

hey i was just looking at the site im a little confused to i need the xp disc?>
