Ever open saved .jpg's or .gif's that you have acquired from the web or a friend or saved from a .psd file or whatever and noted that you have to unlock the layer before you can make any changes to it.

There are 4 (approx.) ways to unlock the image. But the fastest way to do it is to double click on the layer and hit enter at the dialog box (to make it a layer) and off you go.

I'm sure some people already know this, but I'm sure this will help some people to speed up the process if you do this via the longer ways ie-(Select All, Copy, Close, New, Paste).

Actually, I think these little tips are great! Yes, I happened to know that one too, but I know quite a few people who don't. It's amazing how these simple little things can enhance your workflow, even if you're quite experienced in using a program. Well done, star for you!

Well thats only if it's a jpg..Gif has to be converted to rgb first..

But good tip none the less..

lol... I noticed that actually just after I posted this. I wonder why there is no conversion when you make it a layer. Maybe in PS-8. ;-)

I had a problem with the Lock/Unlock image function...Yes, you can rename the image, but to KEEP the images that you open from staying locked all the time, you can, when you hit "save as", unclick the "Layers" box and click on the "as a copy" box in the save column near the bottom. I kept having to unlock each photo. After I did a "save as copy" in the save options box, all of the images were opened. Just save one and do the above steps, it should keep that pick as standard for the others.
BTW, I am using photoshop 7.0

SPYDERIX: You can alternatively alt-double click the locked layer and it will instantly became a layer without giving you the NEW LAYER dialogue box!

Crickey! I just saw the November 29, but didn't notice the 2002! This threads over a year old! Happy Birthday thread. Excuse my post SPYDERIX if you long since knew of what I said!!! :)

[LOL]

I like the alt double click. I hate when that dialog box comes up. Using alt as well is a good technique especially when doing a batch process with actions ;-)

A question occured to me when reading the first post in this thread: Does the Select All > Copy function cause any loss of quality to the layer you copy? I've always pictured the copy function in any program as kind of a low-quality/temporary "save"--just kind of a way of stashing a little information away on a clipboard somewhere. I don't yet trust it to keep all of my data so I rarely use it.

Any comments?

Arjay418,

The copy function will save everything as is. There is a temporary file somewhere I believe but the file is local and therefore file size isn't an issue. Every pixel is saved exactly as it appears. Same goes for print screen.

Hope this helps!
