We have a Word document with an index of bookmarked page numbers on a cover page that point to the actual pages. When the user does Print, Preview the page numbers are refreshed.

They want to be able to change those pages numbers on occasion and have them not refresh when they Print, Preview.

I understand that to accomplish this they need to 'unlink the fields'.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? (I didn't create this document, so I'm explaining it as it was explained to me.)

Thanks.

Highlight the field you want to unlink and do: Ctrl+Shift+F9

That should unlink the field.

Hi Palmyra,

You can unlink the fields via Ctrl+Shift+F9, but this permanently stops them from refreshing.

An alternative is to lock the fields via Ctrl+Shift+F11. That way, you can unlock them later if you want to allow them to refresh again.

At a more general level, why would you want to change the page references from the ones Word works out for you? Unless you're cross-referencing to the wrong location (which you should fix), it doesn't seem to make sense to me to risk having them point elsewhere.

Cheers
