Hello,

I am running OSX 10.3.9 and I run my own mail server off of it for a company about 200 people strong. I have a user named neu that is recieving a massive amount of emails I know this because I bought a epg spam filter from Abaca, however I cannont find a user named neu in workgroup manager nor does the name neu exist as a short name for an email account. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,
LindanSolo

I'm not sure what you mean by "I have a user" - basically it sounds like either 1) you *used* to have such a user 2) someone has added a bad user name to an email list.

More importantly, are these emails "real" or are they all spam?

If they are real, you need to figure out who is sending them. If they are all spam, just ignore them.

Ok. Ill try to explain better keep in mind I hate Mac with a passion and if it were up to me id throw the thing in the trash and run windows 2003 with microsoft exchange server. When I say user im talking about a user in workgroup manager. You with me so far? If I used to have such a user then why am I still recieving mail to that address when that user is no longer on my mac? When someone sends mail to that address it should return to them, correct? As for adding a bad user name I have been over every user name and short name in workgroup manager and there is nothing wrong with any of them.

As for are the emails real or spam, well thats why I am asking this question in the first place. They could be both the epg is brand new and has to be taught what to block and what not to be blocked so far it has been blocking good emails with the bad. And I dont want to ignore them even if they are spam I want that user ( wether a real person or a mistake of some kind ) off my server.

LindanSolo,

First: What do you mean when you say that you are "receiving them on my mac"? If you are receiving them, then why can't you tell if they are spam or not? What user is receiving them if the user they are addressed to doesn't exist?

As nearly as I can tell this isn't a Mac issue, I just don't think you understand how SMTP works. In the SMTP protocol, addresses have the form "user@machine". If the address says "baduser@mymac" then it's going to be delivered to your Mac and it's up to your Mac to reply to the sender with an error message like "550 baduser unknown."

Basically, if someone outside your organization thinks that "baduser@mycompany.com" is a valid address then there is nothing you can do to stop them from sending to that address, except to reject the mail as it arrives. The problem has nothing to do with your workgroup manager, or with the Mac.

From your description, if your Mac is rejecting mail sent to the non-existant user then it is operating correctly.
